What a prompt actually needs

A usable photography prompt reads like a shot brief written in plain sentences. Six layers carry almost all of the result:

• Subject — who or what is in frame, plus the details that matter: age range, build, clothing, expression, pose.
• Scene — where it happens, and what the background is allowed to do. In product work the background must never compete with the hero.
• Lighting — direction, quality and mood. “Soft window light from camera left” beats “good lighting” every time.
• Camera and lens — focal length, aperture and depth of field. This is what makes an image read as a photograph instead of an illustration.
• Composition — shot type, camera angle, aspect ratio, and rules such as the golden ratio.
• Grade and style — colour treatment and the photographic or illustrative reference you are aiming at.

Why prompts are not portable between models

Midjourney rewards compact, comma-light phrasing with trailing parameters such as an aspect ratio flag. FLUX responds better to longer natural-language description. GPT Image and Nano Banana behave more like instruction followers and take direct, conversational sentences. Seedream sits between the two. A worked example

Negative prompts and references

Negative prompts remove recurring failure modes: extra fingers, warped text, plastic skin, heavy over-sharpening. Keep them short and specific. Reference images are the other lever — use one to hold an identity, or to copy an outfit onto a new subject while pose, scene and light stay under your control.
